SUMMARY:Journal Club: Pathological Demand Avoidance - Ethics and Emerging Research
DESCRIPTION:Journal Club: Pathological Demand Avoidance – Ethics and Emerging Research\nOctober 28\, 2026\n12:00 – 1:00 pm via Zoom\n1.0 Category II Ethics CEUs \nPresenter:\nJennifer Taylor\, DSW\, LCSW-C\, RPT-S\nSenior Manager\, Institute for Professional Development & Grant Funded Clinical Programs\nJewish Community Services \nWorkshop Description \nPathological demand avoidance (PDA) is a growing topic of interest in work with neurodivergent children and families\, but the research is still developing. In this interactive journal club\, participants will review current peer-reviewed research on PDA in real time\, without completing a pre-read. Together\, we will look at what researchers are finding about demand avoidance\, how it is measured\, and what may contribute to these behaviors. We will also consider areas where the evidence is limited or conflicting and discuss what these findings may mean for clinical practice. \nParticipants will consider the ethical questions involved in using this emerging and contested clinical term\, including how research evidence\, clinical experience\, and client perspectives inform practice decisions. \nLearning Objectives \nAs a result of this training\, participants will be able to: \n\n\nDescribe at least three current research findings related to pathological demand avoidance and neurodivergent children. \n\n\nIdentify at least one strength and one limitation of the research and the implications for clinical practice. \n\n\nAnalyze how these research findings can be applied to specific cases by integrating clinical experience\, research findings\, and professional judgment. \n\n\n\nRegister Now!\n\n \nJennifer Taylor\, DSW\, LCSW-C\, RPT-S\, earned her Doctor of Social Work (DSW) from the University of Kentucky\, Master of Social Work from Florida State University\, and Bachelor of Social Work from the University of West Florida. Dr. Taylor’s professional qualifications include being a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Maryland and Florida. She is a Registered Play Therapist–Supervisor and an EMDR Approved Consultant. \nDr. Taylor serves as Senior Manager of the Institute for Professional Development and Grant-Funded Clinical Programs at Jewish Community Services\, where she provides clinical leadership\, program development\, and oversight of large-scale\, grant-funded behavioral health initiatives serving children and families. Dr. Taylor’s clinical focus is on helping children and their caregivers have meaningful and joyful relationships while supporting the wellness and development of the professionals that serve those families. \nDr. Taylor has presented nationally and internationally and has published multiple book chapters on play therapy\, supervision\, and nature-based interventions. She has also served as an adjunct professor in social work at the University of Memphis and the University of West Florida. \nWorkshop Fees\n\nGeneral Professional Community: $25.00\nJewish Day School Educators\, JCS Retirees\, NJHSA Members: $20.00\nCurrent JCS Staff\, Board\, Advisory Council & Staff of Agencies Funded by The Associated*: Free with Code.\n\n\nRegister Now! \n*To request your code and see a list of eligible agencies funded by The Associated\, click here.  \nJewish Community Services is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education learning activities and maintains full responsibility for this program. Her work has focused extensively on military personnel\, veterans\, first responders\, healthcare professionals\, and individuals experiencing posttraumatic stress\, grief\, and moral injury. \nLeilani is an approved clinical supervisor in Alabama and Florida and has trained and mentored clinicians in trauma-informed care\, EMDR\, and evidence-based treatment approaches. She is a sought-after presenter who is passionate about translating emerging research into practical clinical strategies that therapists can immediately implement in their work with clients.
