Workshop Description

Structural racism continues to shape mental health systems in ways that influence diagnosis, treatment access, engagement, and outcomes for historically marginalized communities.

This workshop examines the historical and contemporary impact of structural racism across mental health and social service systems while providing participants with practical, equity-focused strategies to strengthen assessment, intervention, advocacy, and organizational practice.

The session meets the Maryland Board of Social Work Examiner’s new one-time structural racism training requirement.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Assess the ways structural racism contributes to disparities in mental health diagnosis, treatment engagement, and client outcomes.

  • Apply a structural racism lens to biopsychosocial assessments and case conceptualization.

  • Advocate for policies and practices that advance equity and reduce barriers for historically marginalized populations.

  • Critically evaluate organizational and systemic factors that perpetuate racial inequities in health, education, and social service systems.

  • Implement at least one actionable strategy to promote anti-racist practice within their professional setting.
