Alcohol and gambling are widely accepted in social culture, often associated with celebrations, relaxation, and entertainment. However, this normalization can make it easier to overlook the risks of addiction and its broader impact on individuals and communities.
This training will examine the risk factors, policy implications, and strategies for reducing harm related to alcohol use and gambling. Participants will learn how to identify those at risk, encourage open conversations, and connect individuals with resources for prevention and recovery.
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify the risk factors, similarities and differences amongst gambling and alcohol use disorder.
- Normalize the conversation surrounding gambling, recognizing the social acceptance similar to alcohol, and ways to reduce harm.
- Utilize the DSM-5 to formalize a diagnosis of Gambling Disorder, a Substance-Related and Addictive Disorder.
- Discuss the real-life experiences of addiction and recovery from the Center’s first Certified Peer Recovery Specialist.
