School-Based Mental Health Services
All Children Deserve a Chance to Thrive!
Young people today face increasing pressures that impact emotional and social well-being. Accessible, compassionate support and practical tools can help students navigate challenges, build resilience, and thrive in school and in life.
As part of the Maryland Consortium on Coordinated Community Supports (MCCCS), we are partnering with Baltimore County Public Schools to provide specialized behavioral health services to students and their families at designated partner schools.
The services are open to all families at our partner schools, regardless of religious background, income level, or insurance status and are available in both English and Spanish.
WHAT SERVICES WILL BE PROVIDED?
Classroom-Based Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
Program curriculum for students may include:
Be Well, a comprehensive social-emotional learning (SEL) program that promotes student wellness, resilience, and positive youth development. Through engaging, age-appropriate learning experiences, students build self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication, relationship-building, and decision-making skills. By strengthening these essential life skills, Be Well empowers students to navigate challenges, foster healthy connections, and support their overall well-being both in and out of the classroom.
Botvin LifeSkills Training®, an evidence-based program that promotes mental health, social-emotional (SEL) skills, and positive youth development. By teaching coping strategies, stress management, and effective communication skills, it helps students build resilience and make healthy choices with the objective of preventing risky behaviors like substance use and abuse.
QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Gatekeeper Course for Suicide Prevention, a proven, practical three-step model that can train anyone aged 10 and older – friends, parents, faculty, coaches – to recognize warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Deaths by suicide have been rising, ranking as Maryland’s second leading cause of death for those 10-34 years old. The QPR mission is to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives.
Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM), an evidence-based program for young people ages 13 to 17, in which they learn about and explore the topic of mental health.
Therapeutic Mentoring Program – Check & Connect
Check & Connect® is an evidence-based mentoring program designed to support students who show signs of disengagement from school and may be at risk of dropping out. Through consistent, one-on-one mentoring, students build trusting relationships, strengthen problem-solving skills, develop persistence, and increase their engagement in school.
This free program is primarily available to Middle School students, grades 6–8. Depending on program capacity, younger or older students may also be eligible. Students with chronic absenteeism will be given first priority for participation.
Therapy Services
Students have access to licensed mental health professionals who provide consultations, individual and family therapy, psychotherapy groups, and play therapy. Services are available at partner schools, at our Owings Mills or Park Heights offices, or through telehealth.
We accept Medicaid and most private health insurance plans for therapy services. Students from partner schools who are uninsured or cannot afford copays due to financial hardship may qualify for grant funds to cover copays or the cost of services.
For more information or to request services, please call 410-466-9200.
As a comprehensive human services agency, JCS offers additional wrap-around services that can help students and their families achieve their goals, enhance their well-being and maximize their independence. Some services beyond those supported by the MCCCS grant may have eligibility requirements or fees.
In addition to the grant-funded services available to the partner schools noted above, we provide Wellness & Prevention Programs for Youth to public and independent schools throughout the Greater Baltimore Area. We also welcome new clients of all ages for our Therapy & Psychiatry Services at both our Park Heights and Owings Mills locations.
