6 Quick Tips to Stand Out During the Hiring Process

By Lisa P. Cohn, PHR

Job hunting can feel overwhelming, and with so much competition, it’s tough to know how to stand out. Hiring Teams look beyond your resume; they notice how you present yourself, communicate, and connect with the company from start to finish. Here are 6 tips on how to make every step count.

  1. Personalize Your Approach

Tailor your resume and cover letter to the specific job. Highlight skills that match the description and weave in details from your research about the company’s mission and goals to show why you’re a strong fit.

  1.  Show Professionalism

Be on time for every interview (virtual or in person). Respond to emails promptly, come prepared with thoughtful questions, and dress the part to show you take the opportunity seriously.

  1. Use Concrete Examples

Prepare specific stories from past roles that demonstrate impact: like leading a project, improving a process, or saving time or money. Use measurable results when possible and connect your examples to the employer’s needs.

  1. Ask Smart Questions

Skip the generic “What’s the culture like?” Instead, ask strategic questions about performance expectations, success metrics, and team goals. This shows engagement and genuine interest in the role.

  1. Be Authentic

If you have job gaps or career changes, address them honestly. Recruiters value transparency and want to see how you handle challenges; not canned responses.

  1. Follow Up

Send a personalized thank-you email by the end of the day. Reference something specific from the conversation and proofread carefully, especially the interviewer’s name!

Standing out doesn’t require being flashy; it’s about preparation, professionalism, and authenticity. Recruiters notice the details, and these steps can give you the edge you need to land the job.
