There are so many options for employers to conduct online interviews in today’s market. Zoom, Google Meets, Skype, and Microsoft Teams are some of the new technology platforms that organizations are utilizing for all phases of interviews. A virtual meeting allows employers and candidates to “meet” without a lot of time and money spent on travel expenses. Much of the information is the same for virtual interviewing as face-to-face interviews, but there are some differences that are important to remember.
Some tips on preparing for your virtual interview:
- Test out and become familiar with the technology before the scheduled interview. Make sure everything is working, you know how to change various settings, and your background looks professional.
- Pick a quiet, distraction free spot where the interviewer can hear you and not your dog barking! Also, make sure your children know you cannot be disturbed during the interview by posting a sign on a closed door.
- Dress appropriately, just as you would for an in-person interview. Make sure your clothes are clean and wrinkle free and that you also wear professional pants or a skirt, even if you don’t think it will be seen in the screen.
- Prepare answers to common interviewing questions and create questions for the interviewer as well. Always research the company before the interview, so you can build rapport with the interviewer and show your interest.
Our culture has embraced technology so it’s best to jump onboard. Ensuring these strategies are in place will help you make a lasting impression!
