With both national and Maryland unemployment rates each hovering around 4%, you may have heard that it’s a “job-seeker’s market” which, according to Recruiter.com means there more jobs than workers to fill them, so candidates can be more picky than usual and employers might need to step up their game. But don’t let the term fool you. A job-seeker’s market can be a bit misleading since it can present challenges for those looking for employment as well as those who are hiring.
Regardless of what category you are in, there are ways to make to the most of your situation:
Employer: At this point you’re thinking all the good workers are taken. However, if you bet that there are passive jobseekers out there ready to make a move, you would be right. About 75% of employed workers are checking out job listings and nearly two-thirds look at new opportunities within just three months of starting a new job. LinkedIn could be a good source of hidden candidates. Or, try an employee referral program, where current employees are rewarded for recommending a candidate whom you hire.
Unemployed Job-seeker: In the so-called job-seeker’s market, your challenges have actually multiplied. First, there are fewer job openings; and second, you have begun to compete with a pool of employed people who employers find attractive enough to attempt to lure away from their current gig. Your search for employment has been difficult enough, as you battle to get your resume noticed by a hiring manager, commit to growing your network, and find opportunities to engage with employers. To make the most of your situation, keep to your search strategy. A targeted search can yield results.
Employed Jobseeker: You are in an enviable position, with the freedom to look passively for a different and better-paying job, and a proven employment track record that could attract attention from other employers. If you are ready to look into new opportunities more actively, this is the time.
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, because even if you aren’t looking for a job or thinking about hiring at the moment, things can always change quickly.
