Recently, the Career Center at JCS conducted a series of focus groups with employers and jobseekers. One of the most surprising findings was how much the groups have in common when it comes to job search and hiring, even though they would appear to be on opposite sides of the process. Take a look at the list of statements below and see if you can figure out if it was said by a prospective employee or prospective employer.
- “The whole search process is cumbersome and takes too long.”
- “Job boards aren’t working for me.”
- “Technology does not necessarily make things easier.”
- “There are too many resumes chasing a single job opening.”
- “Having several generations together in one workplace is challenging.”
You have probably already guessed that jobseekers and employers expressed the same frustrations! Perhaps it is time to re-frame the process so both groups can make their paths to a successful search and hire outcome more efficient. If jobseekers could think a little like employers, and employers a little more like jobseekers, a better connection might be made. For example, when looking at an employer website as a jobseeker, consider not just what the employer does, but what their needs might be and how you can contribute to the company’s growth. Mentioning that in a cover letter could score an interview. Employers might want to add more information in their posting about their company culture, which could help them attract better matches and narrow the pool of applicants. Additionally, networking always presents opportunities for job seekers and employers to connect in the hiring process, so both groups might want to do more.
The good news is neither jobseekers nor employers need to go it alone. With the support and partnership of JCS Career Coaches and Account Representatives, these two groups can have more in common than frustration.
