Unique Times May Need A Unique Approach

By M. Fine

I find myself consistently providing the same advice to Ignite Career Center clients currently experiencing employment issues, particularly during the last several weeks.  Its advice on how to attack the head game. You know, the voice inside you that says, This is hard. This is not fun. I simply cant do this.”

These are unique and different times in the job market, which means you may have to consider a unique approach and think a little differently. You might ask yourself, What other types of work can I do?or maybe, What skills can I develop? You might also want to think about taking a temporary position that you might never have taken prior to this. As an example, Im currently working with a furloughed substitute teacher. For now, hes delivering pharmaceuticals to peoples homes. Hes making the best of it. He is earning income, and as a bonus, he likes the independence.

I have another client who is using this time to take a free online sales training course. She needs to work from home and the classes are preparing her for a telemarketing career. Here is the best part – not only is she getting free training through Zoom, but shes also working with networking organizers and making important contacts in the class that she will then be able to use to find a job.

I say embrace the uncomfortable! Ask yourself, What can I do differently today?” Use these difficult times as an opportunity. Now is the time to explore. Now is the time to reinvent yourself. Tell yourself, Im going to do whatever it takes to get through this!

Now go do it.
